Sundowning
What is sundowning?
Sundowning is the confusion, agitation, anxiety, and restlessness that many people with dementia or Alzheimer's experience in the late afternoon and evening. Episodes can involve pacing, suspicion, wandering, or trying to leave, and they are one of the most exhausting parts of caregiving. Read the full guide: what is sundowning.
Is sundowning the same as delirium?
No. Sundowning follows a fairly predictable late-day pattern. Delirium comes on suddenly over hours or days and needs a doctor the same day. See sundowning vs. delirium.
How Hamton works
How does Hamton de-escalate a sundowning episode?
The moment an episode starts, you dial your loved one's dedicated Hamton number and put it on speaker or hand them the phone. They hear a familiar, trusted voice that uses validation, reminiscence, and gentle redirection, the same non-drug techniques care professionals use, to guide them from agitation back to calm. See how it works.
Whose voice should we record first?
The person your loved one responds to most, often a spouse, child, or sibling. Higher plans support more than one voice.
How many memories do we need?
Start with five to ten. More memories give the voice more to draw on, but you can begin small and build as you go.
How long does a call last?
Most calls last 5 to 20 minutes: as long as it takes to settle, and no longer. Each call follows a guided arc: connect, acknowledge how they feel, reassure, turn to a familiar memory, and then close calmly. The voice ends the call once your loved one is settled.
Does my loved one need a smartphone or app?
No. Hamton works over an ordinary phone call: any phone can dial the line and be put on speaker or handed over. You can also schedule calls to ring their own phone at the times episodes usually start. The app is for you and your care team: recording voices and memories, and reading call reports.
What if they realize it isn't really that person?
The goal is comfort, not deception. In an agitated state, a familiar voice and familiar stories provide regulation regardless. Many families are open about the tool during calm periods.
Safety, consent and privacy
Is Hamton a sundowning treatment?
Hamton is a non-pharmacological de-escalation aid, not a medical treatment. It complements, and never replaces, guidance from your doctor or care team. Many families use it alongside the routines and treatments their clinicians recommend.
Is this safe?
Hamton is a support tool. It does not replace medical care, medication management, or professional supervision. Always follow your care team's guidance. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
Whose permission do you need to clone a voice?
The person whose voice is recorded, or their authorized representative, must give explicit consent before a voice profile is created. See our consent policy.
What happens to the recordings?
They are encrypted, private to your family, and never sold. You can delete them at any time. See security and our privacy policy.
Plans and billing
How much does Hamton cost?
Family is $49 a month, Family Plus is $149 a month, and care teams pay $45 per patient per month. Yearly billing costs less. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. See pricing.
What happens if we run out of minutes?
You can buy a minute pack at any time, and purchased minutes roll over until used. Turn on auto-refill and a pack is added automatically when your balance reaches 30 minutes, so a call is never cut short.
Is there a plan for care facilities?
Yes. The Caregiver plan is billed per patient, with minutes pooled across your facility and role-based access for staff. See Hamton for care facilities.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. You can cancel from the app's settings, and your plan stays active until the end of the period you have paid for.
